The State of Tamil Nadu was facing a problem of high infant mortality and birth abnormalities in spite of the presence of primary healthcare centres (PHCs) with ultrasound machines. The Government's challenge was to overcome the shortage of skilled sonologists at rural centres to improve the quality of fetal anomaly diagnosis and reporting.
